Today's recipe sites and bloggers posts, many very long, and video tutorials of recipes, history, explanations of techniques and of course shots of how beautiful the food looks. These can certainly be helpful.
But I have found it interesting, after seeing Let's Cook It Right by Adelle Davis and The New American Cookbook by Lily Haxworth Wallace, and others I came across in this exploration, these books are loaded with nutritional information and health benefits associated with various foods. I had heard Sue Becker speak of Adelle Davis quite fondly so I was not surprised. These books offer sound wisdom on setting up a kitchen, cooking food to retain nutrients and how to bring health through food to your family. The recipes I have made from Adelle's book certainly make me think how large families afforded to be well fed.
The recipes sound absolutely amazing! I got the green 1947 version in which she talks about whole grain wheat, lard etc. Some information will need to be looked into as modern teachings may vary - find out which is truth. 1947 edition is pre-vegetable oil and canned food crazes which had their rise from the 60' onward.
One additional thought, these books certainly set up a household for preparedness; stocking a pantry with staples rather than running to the store every day. Today preparedness (so called "prepper") is almost a dirty word but not long ago that was just wisdom.
A bit of a rabbit trail but I certainly enjoy this information, the advice and recipes.
